By Creighton Alexander One of my top 10 favorite movies is “The Breakfast Club” (1985), but not just because Molly Ringwald starred in it. Set on a Saturday in a detention hall, five high school students - the criminal, the athlete, the basket case, the princess and the brain - figure out that they are all looking to find their place in life. Five different strategies, but one common goal: to belong, to matter and to be seen for who they really are. In fact, I could argue that process of how those five strangers become “The...

My wife and I worked our way through seminary by making crosses. I had learned how to carve from an artist in my grandmother’s hometown, John Christopher White. I spent most Fridays of my three semesters in college in his workshop as he taught me about carving and what it meant to follow Jesus. You can check out his work here. During our first Lent in seminary, I had the idea to cut West Texas mesquite thorns and weave them into crowns of thorns for Easter. What I didn’t realize was how painful of an enterprise it would bec...

After my Kansas Jayhawks got knocked out of the NCAA Tournament, I pretended not to pay attention to the championship game between the University of North Carolina and Gonzaga University. I even mostly didn’t see the news coverage of the parade back in Chapel Hill. Congrats, North Carolina (not really). In 2008, I was in the first year of my studies at Kansas when we won the national championship. Classes were unofficially canceled the following week as planned and unplanned celebrations took place all over Lawrence. Out of...

Lent begins on Wednesday, March 1 and marks a 40-day period of fasting, repentance and self-examination before Easter. If you would like to read a short description of Lent, you can click here . With Lent, Christians have fasted as a means to focus on God. Types of fasting can include giving up sweets, going out to eat or all things electronic and/or social media. For my wife and I, our standard Lent fast has normally been giving up Diet Cokes from Sonic or giving them up altogether. This year, we were challenged to not onl...

Naked and Unashamed Continuing on with our love theme for February, I drew the short eros straw. Eros is defined as romantic or passionate love. It is where we get such terms as erotic, which leads us to talking about sex, and reminds me of one of my dad’s favorite jokes. “Do you know what the difference is between naked and “nekid” (pronounced with a strong, southern accent out of the corner of your mouth) are? Naked is when you don’t have any clothes on. “Nekid” is when you don’t have any clothes on and are up to no good....

Since receiving an invitation to join the Acts 2 family, I have been praying to learn God's heart for your community. It’s not the clearest idea in my head yet, but an idea was sparked by the upcoming New Year celebrations – particularly the Chinese tradition of each year being named for one of the twelve animals in the zodiac. Instead of "the year of the rooster," I find myself praying that 2017 be the “year of the home.” Here's what I have been praying for our church home and each individual home in Acts 2: That the home ...
