By Melissa Nelms you just have to be vulnerable enough to deal with your own stuff to really be there for someone in their time of need. This is difficult for many people. We’d like to separate what we are going through so we can live in the fantasy of “this would never happen to me because I would do this so differently.” That mentality is unhelpful. Here are some basic guidelines on providing empathy found in a Psychology Today article written by Kate Thieda: In “ I Thought It Was Just Me (But It Isn't)” (2008), Brown ref...

By Creighton Alexander One of my top 10 favorite movies is “The Breakfast Club” (1985), but not just because Molly Ringwald starred in it. Set on a Saturday in a detention hall, five high school students - the criminal, the athlete, the basket case, the princess and the brain - figure out that they are all looking to find their place in life. Five different strategies, but one common goal: to belong, to matter and to be seen for who they really are. In fact, I could argue that process of how those five strangers become “The...

By Jenn Shaver The past year for the Shaver family has brought a few life changes. Last summer, I chose to leave my career as an administrator in public education and pursue an opportunity outside of the education realm. I enjoyed what I did and made great friendships with the people that I worked with, but there was something missing. I will never forget the day that my husband Jason and I were at church and a family got up and spoke about their experience in the school system and some struggles they had faced that school ...

By John Hurd As my friend Jorge and I sat down to speak with a group of teachers from Caballo Blanco, there was one teacher that stood out to me. She was called Chiqui, which means “shorty” in Spanish. While her small stature was very true to the meaning of her name, Jorge and I both came to the conclusion that what she lacks in size, she more than makes up for with a generous and caring spirit. The school where Chiqui works is located 20 miles or so inland from the Pacific coast of Guatemala. She has been working there for...

By Morgan Wright DaySpring South is life changing for anyone who attends, especially teens. Teens today are constantly distracted from God. Cross Point Camp is the perfect place for teenagers to grow closer to God, have fun, learn more about the Bible and connect to friends. I have experienced God's love like never before during DaySpring activities, including communion, Bible study, workshop, BASIC, worship, walking among the trees and swimming in the lake. A typical day at camp starts off with communion at the cross overl...

By Chad Hoffman Recreation has always been an important part of my life, and I believe that teamwork is a very important part of recreation, whether it be as a VBS leader, volunteer or participant. Sports ministry is a great way to reach all kids and adults, especially those that don’t feel comfortable in big groups. That’s why I think Hero Central VBS is going to be an awesome time. At Hero Central VBS, we will be learning about three Bible heroes and how God can give us strength when we feel weak. We have one game that al...

By Jeff Hedrick As we approach Father’s Day, I am reminded of how blessed I am to be a father. Seeing my son Marc grow into a responsible adult has been one of my most fulfilling accomplishments in my life. That is not to say that it was all smooth sailing, because there were certainly waves in the ocean along the way. My son, for example, endured a father that gave too much attention to a career, was not as patient as he should have been and often expected him to be too much like I wished I were. At the age of 13, a divorc...

By James Rose In 1986, Christ United Methodist Church in Memphis, Tenn., launched Service Over Self (SOS). This organization’s goal and purpose is to build the Kingdom of God by serving some of the most vulnerable citizens in Memphis. By Joetta Myers Summer is here and it’s time for swimming, vacationing, staycationing and fun with family and friends! I love this time of year and one of my favorite parts of summer is VBS!!! This year is no different with Hero Central as our Vacation Bible School theme. We are excited to dig into heroes of the Bible and discover our strength in God. As we are approaching VBS, I have been pondering how my experiences as a former elementary school teacher can relate to my experience being on the Acts 2 staff during VBS. I t...

Acts 2 partnered up with Living Water International, an organization helping communities acquire clean water, to raise money for a piece of drilling equipment needed to drill in certain locations in Guatemala with difficult geographical barriers. Check out the video below to see how your missions offerings are supporting missions outside of Acts 2's walls, including providing funding for our friends at Living Water International. Please feel free to give online by clicking here.

By Briana Tobey I first met Andy and Melissa in high school at a church conference. A few years later we were all in college together at OCU, even taking some of the same classes. So, when I heard that Andy was appointed to my church home, Acts 2, as our associate pastor I was excited. Then, Andy started talking about a new church within a church and I think my heart was already in it before I even really understood what it was. I had an opportunity to support my friend in his first attempt at church planting, and I knew I ...

By Chantelle Foster When I became a mom for the first time on August 2, 1996, my doctor, Susan Chambers, said something profound to me. I had just survived a difficult delivery with John Mark, when I looked up at Dr. Chambers and said, “That was the hardest thing I’ve ever done!” She replied, “No, the hardest thing you’ll ever do is raising this child!” Her profoundly wise statement has stuck with me these past 20 years. I recently reminded her of this statement and we both had a good laugh! She spoke that truth to me as sh...

Teresa Hedrick was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease at the age of 25. She was eventually placed on the transplant list and posted about it on her Facebook page. Misty Blankenship saw the post. Both women are members of Acts 2 but didn’t really know each other at the time. Two and a half years ago, Misty felt God leading her to see if she was a match to donate her kidney to Teresa, and it turned out that she was. Teresa and Misty shared their story about seeking God and being in community at Acts 2 in honor of Nation...

Acts 2 has been a huge blessing for us during a very difficult time in our lives. We had been attending off and on (Easter/Christmas Eve) for a while prior to joining, but we have since found a home and a safe haven during a difficult time of recovery. Our story began in the spring of 2006 after I, Ryan, moved to Oklahoma from Texas. Terri was a teller at the bank where I opened up a business account and we had an immediate connection. We were engaged in June 2008 and married in May 2009. Our son was born in May 2011 and ha...

As a 6th grader, I was confirmed in the little rural church of Coweta First United Methodist Church. I’ll never forget our pastor, Rev. Helen Taylor, inviting Ellen Lowery to speak to our Confirmation class and share about her personal relationship with Jesus. Ellen was in her eighties by then. She had lived a lot of life and she was overjoyed to get to share it with us. In preparation, Helen asked our class of about 12 motley kids ranging in age from about 10 – 15 what we thought God looked like. Most of us described somet...

My husband has been an active duty officer in the Air Force for over 17 years, and thus, we have called many places home. We’ve learned to appreciate the uniqueness of each place, since we know they are our temporary homes. When we came to Tinker Air Force Base in 2006, I was pregnant with our first child, Eli. We had prayed for this child for years and undergone many types of fertility treatments in order to fulfill our dreams of becoming parents. When we began attending Acts 2 UMC, I was longing for a place to be connecte...

by Jeff Hedrick As I write this today, I can only imagine the anticipation that a remote community in LaTortuga, Guatemala is feeling as they prepare to receive the gift of clean, life-giving water from a group of strangers from an unfamiliar place called Edmond, Oklahoma. This gift, that otherwise might not be attainable, models the gift of Christ that we celebrate in this season. I am so blessed to be part of a Christian community of believers called Acts 2, where we express our gratefulness for Christ’s life- changing gr...

As I was reflecting on what I want to share with the young families of Acts 2 about the meaning of Christmas, some prominent memories of my childhood came to mind. I thought about the little manger scene my family put out every Christmas (oh, how I loved playing with that manger scene!) I recalled the bag we would receive from our church filled with ribbon candy, fruit and nuts. I remembered singing the Little Blue Angel in my Christmas program at school – and each year, after the program, we would place a blue angel on top...

Trunk or Treat is a free event hosted by Acts 2 to reach out to our community. We began this ministry as a way to provide an alternative to door to door trick or treating. It is a wonderful way to gather in a safe place and have fun together. Acts 2’s Trunk or Treat is this Friday night (October 28) from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m.! We will have pizza during the event and a worship service will begin at 6:30 p.m. Our worship service is open to anyone and we’ll even be giving out a special treat during our time of worship. This year we...

Stewardship – it’s a word that we hear most often in a church setting, generally focused in the context of our responsibility to support the work of the church to build the kingdom of God. But, what does it really mean – stewardship – the act of being a “steward”? From a young age, my parents taught me the importance of being generous by modeling selfless giving of their time and resources in and to the community through the church. I am not ashamed to say that I have consistently practiced these teachings throughout my lif...
