1c easter 2017 2

By Briana Tobey

I first met Andy and Melissa in high school at a church conference. A few years later we were all in college together at OCU, even taking some of the same classes. So, when I heard that Andy was appointed to my church home, Acts 2, as our associate pastor I was excited. Then, Andy started talking about a new church within a church and I think my heart was already in it before I even really understood what it was. I had an opportunity to support my friend in his first attempt at church planting, and I knew I wanted to help.

I’ve been in and around ministry most of my life, but church planting is something I hadn’t previously experienced. I knew it would be work. I knew it would push me past my comfort zone—because inviting strangers to church is not how I like to spend my free time. Nonetheless, inviting strangers is exactly what I did. I didn’t love it. But I did love seeing large numbers of people we invited attend block parties. I loved seeing a full worship space on our first Sunday. All the late nights and awkward conversations felt worth it. Of course, that’s when the real work began.

Now on Sundays, I get up earlier than I do for work to get ready and drive 30 minutes to Frontier Elementary to build One Church. Our launch team sets up the chairs, we make a nursery, we even have to steam the curtains we use as walls. Then we stay late to take it all down and pack it up. Church is now a 5-hour commitment and sometimes it’s exhausting, but it’s our team’s calling. God is bringing new people to church through us and that makes it all worth it.

A decade ago a United Methodist Bishop wrote a book called “The Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations.” One of the practices, Radical Hospitality, was a practice that seemed like a simple concept at the time. It’s not until now, after this experience with One Church, that I’m truly understanding how to be radically hospitable. I think the answer is authenticity, which is something that can’t be taught. Authenticity comes as a result of truly believing in your mission. Believing in our mission drives us to show up every week and do the work. When we stand at the door and greet people, we stand confidently proud of our church.

In the 4 months since our launch, we have had 5 baptisms and many first time guests coming to church almost every Sunday. I can’t wait to see what else God has in store for us. Thank you all for the support and prayers as we live out God’s call on our lives through One Church.
