Summer is here and it’s time for swimming, vacationing, staycationing and fun with family and friends!  I love this time of year and one of my favorite parts of summer is VBS!!! This year is no different with Hero Central as our Vacation Bible School theme. We are excited to dig into heroes of the Bible and discover our strength in God.

As we are approaching VBS, I have been pondering how my experiences as a former elementary school teacher can relate to my experience being on the Acts 2 staff during VBS. I taught for 32 years and had the opportunity to touch thousands of lives not only by teaching students but also by showing them I cared for and loved them. My hope for VBS is to touch the lives of children in a loving, Christ-centered way, so each child will know that Jesus loves them. Quite frankly this is the exact reason I became a teacher many years ago! I wanted to impact the lives of children in a positive and loving way.

I remember receiving a letter a few years back from a former 2nd grader who I had taught many years ago. At the time, I received the letter she was in her senior year of college and was graduating with a degree in elementary education. In her letter, she thanked me for making an impact on her life. She said, “You don’t know how much the love you gave me meant so much to me during this time. You are one of the reasons I am going to be a teacher.” I remember the little girl’s parents were going through a divorce while I was her teacher and I had her stay after school with me a few times to help out around the classroom. It didn’t seem like much at the time, but when I received the letter I realized how showing a child compassion and love can truly make a difference in their lives. Now she can share her love with her own students. Isn’t this what Jesus wants us to do? He wants us to share His love so it will spread to all those around.

While teaching I used a quote of the week, which the students would memorize. I used the following quotes during that time that relate to how we can be heroes and make a difference:

“A hero is any person really intent on making this place better for all people.” -Maya Angelo

“The man who moves mountains begins by carrying away small stones.” -Confucius

In saying all of this, anyone can be a hero to a child. Just show that child you care and are invested in them, listen to their stories and share God’s love with them. This VBS I hope we can all be heroes to the children who will be on the Acts 2 campus. I pray that you will be the one to show them your love, just as God commands us to love one another. Will you be someone’s hero?

John 13:34-35 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
