I never thought I would live in Oklahoma. Just over two years ago, my family moved from Spokane, Wash., to Edmond, Okla. I was in my first trimester of pregnancy with our second child, when we packed up our 2-year-old son and three cats to make the almost 2,000-mile move to a new city where we had no friends or family. On top of that, we were leaving behind BOTH sets of our parents. All that being said, we were determined to make this move our last for the foreseeable future. We were ready to settle down and raise our family.

My husband was (and still is) excited about his new job teaching at Southern Nazarene University and I was looking forward to making friends with other moms and finding friends for my son. One of our top priorities was finding a new church, though, to be honest, I was absolutely dreading this process. We had moved cross-country twice already and consistently had a difficult time with this, taking months to settle on a church home.

On our first Sunday in Oklahoma, with a house full of partially unpacked moving boxes, we decided we would take the time to try our first church, Acts 2 United Methodist Church. On the drive home after service, my husband and I agreed that our church hunt was complete, just as quickly as it had started. We immediately felt welcomed and at home at Acts 2 and were confident that this is where our family belonged. What a relief!

At the time, as a stay-at-home mom, my next priority was to get involved in the community and make some friends. I had heard of MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) before but I had never been part of a group. When I found out that Acts 2 hosted a MOPS group, I was excited to check it out. It was so easy to make friends with these women who were in a similar stage of life and I felt safe expressing both the triumphs and struggles of motherhood.

About six months after MOPS started, I was reaching the end of my pregnancy (another boy, by the way) when I started developing double vision. Long story short, I was induced and had a healthy delivery and baby, but the double vision remained. I am so grateful my mom was around to help, but so was my MOPS family. They helped watch my toddler so my mom could be with me in the hospital during all of this uncertainty. They provided meals as we adjusted to having a new baby in the house and most importantly they prayed! God got me to the right doctors and I eventually got a diagnosis for the cause of my double vision.

Five months later, when I had surgery to correct my double vision, my MOPS family stepped up again to provide childcare, meals, encouragement and prayers. Fast forward to today, I am beginning my second year on the MOPS steering committee, about 95 percent of my friends are from MOPS and I am considering having more babies just so I can stay in MOPS (just kidding, we are done...but seriously). My family would have survived the last two years with or without MOPS, but life is so much better in a community and I can't imagine doing it without my Acts 2 and MOPS family.
