It is an exciting time in the life of our youth. There is always an amazing energy as the students return from summer church camps and mission trips that feeds into the spirit of our fall programming. This year has been no different.

After a summer of learning and practicing how to lead like Jesus, our youth returned to programming this fall with a heart to serve and mentor those younger than them in our very own congregation. We have senior high students teaching and mentoring 38 Confirmation students each Sunday morning alongside our amazing adult mentors. We have students worshipping and serving communion together every week in worship. We have students serving in the children’s department on Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights. We have students preparing for our monthly youth service days in our local community, our fall break mission trip to Cookson Hills and even our senior high mission trip to Memphis with Service Over Self (SOS) next summer. Maybe one of the most exciting moments for me so far has been one of our students, Jevin Bush, sharing his testimony for the first time. He shared his story for 200 of his peers at camp and again for his church family at Acts 2 and One Church upon his return from camp. A student who just this past March professed his faith, along with his Confirmation class, and was baptized. This is how the Kingdom comes!

It is easy to see the Spirit moving in the lives of these youth as they worship, learn and serve together each week. With the addition of our new Assistant Youth Director, Jerrod Baker, we’ve been able to expand our opportunities this fall for service to the community by adding a second youth service day each month – one for junior high and one for senior high. On Oct. 28, our senior high will have the opportunity to serve at Skyline Urban Ministries and our junior high will have the opportunity to serve at the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.

Through the generosity of our church family, we have also been able to address the need for more recreational opportunities for our youth. We were able to purchase the infamous 9-Square that the students fell in love with at camp. It has been put to good use in the backyard each and every week by both the children and youth ministries. If you have never played 9-Square, we invite you to join us some time. Even our adult mentors are hooked.

a2 wednesday night programming 16 2017

This Wednesday, we kicked off our youth move to the Frontier Elementary gym with a game night. With 70+ youth and adult mentors meeting weekly on Wednesday nights for youth fellowship and small group, our Acts 2 facilities have been at maximum capacity. We knew that with the changing season and decrease in sunlight we were going to be limited in the quality of recreation and fellowship we could offer for our students with the space available to us. Again, because of the generosity and investment of our church family, we have been able to rent the gym space next door at Frontier Elementary. This allows us to provide new and exciting recreational opportunities for ministry, as well as reach out to new youth who are looking for a place to connect and belong.

While playing 9-Square, basketball and glow-in-the-dark capture the flag in the gym next door may seem like strange tools for helping students grow in their relationship with Jesus, we know that the bonds formed between students and mentors during these games build a firm foundation for deeper connection, learning and service later. We’re excited about the possibilities the gym presents for our students to invite friends and grow together. We are extremely grateful for the vision and generosity of all those who invest in the lives and spiritual development of our youth.

If you are a youth student or have a youth student and haven’t checked out what we are doing on Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights, you are invited! We would love to come alongside you as you grow in relationship with God and others.
