a2 giving testimonial 02 2017

By Kathy Wallis

Giving is really quite simple. You see a cause, a charity, a person or an organization that stirs something inside you and you give. Simple on an island, at least. But, when giving involves the consent or agreement of another or when your giving takes away from another, it is not simple at all.

My husband, Dennis, and I both enjoy giving. I would even go so far as to say we are both very generous people. But at times, our giving commitments have been (and occasionally, may still be) very complicated and a source of tension. When our son, Chad, and I joined Acts 2 in 2000, Dennis did not join, nor did he have any interest in joining or even attending. As I grew deeper in my faith, my desire to increase my giving also grew. I wanted to move from giving a little money to full tithing. Of course, this increase in giving meant taking significant money from our household, affecting our entire family.   Although we both recognized God’s faithfulness with what we had been giving, Dennis definitely was not on my giving island with me.

After some intense discussion, we came to a resolution that worked for us. I would tithe on my income. Likewise, he could take ten percent of his income and give it or spend it in a way that was meaningful to him. Although I don’t recall him fully using his ten percent, it worked for us at the time. In my eyes, the solution gave us both the ability to feel we had a certain level of control over our own giving, and a certain amount of peace with the other’s giving decisions.

Although it wasn’t our last intense discussion on giving, that discussion started us on the pathway that brought growth and a better understanding of each other’s thoughts and desires toward giving, and toward God’s love and provision. A wonderful pathway, which several years later, brought Dennis to join Chad and me at Acts 2.

Our giving decisions and discussions are much simpler these days. Most of the time we are in complete agreement, or maybe Dennis just says he agrees to get me to be quiet. Oh, well. Anyway, over the past 17 years at Acts 2 I have learned many things. Among them are these: When honoring God, God also wants you to honor your family. In giving, God looks at your heart, not at the dollar sign. You can’t out give God.

God loves each of us right where we are, but He also wants more for us. He wants to move us off of our island and to take us down the pathway that leads us closer to him. And sometimes (okay — almost always) that pathway starts with difficult conversations.

“Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound in you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.” 2 Cor. 9:7-8
