a2 service 43 2017

By Joetta Myers

I remember my daughter asking me about Advent when she was a little girl. I told her Advent is the time when we prepare ourselves to celebrate the birth of Jesus and thank God for this great blessing. I went on to tell her that a blessing is something given to us for which we can be thankful.

Recently, I was listening to the K-Love radio station and they said being grateful for your blessings was actually good for your well-being and health. Then, as Pastor Mark was preaching during the “Taking the Next Step” sermon series, he said research has shown that grateful people sleep better, report fewer aches and are happier. Since I heard this from K-love and Pastor Mark, it must be true! This is the reason our children will be making Advent Blessing Jars.

On the first Sunday of Advent, each child will be given an Advent Blessing Jar and they will place four decorated sticks in the jar. Written on each stick will be something your child may do each week of Advent to share God’s love and bless others. Then, on each day that week, they are to think of a way they have been blessed and write it on the provided slip of paper. Maybe they are blessed by having clean drinking water or they are blessed because they have a bed to sleep in. They will then place that slip of paper in their Advent Blessing Jar. After the four weeks of Advent each child will have a jar full of blessings!

Sometime after Christmas and the beginning of the New Year, my hope is the children will take each slip of paper back out of their jars and read all of the blessings they have. They can also thank Jesus for letting them bless others throughout Advent, and pray how their family can continue to express gratitude for God’s blessings every day.

The children will also receive an Advent calendar where they can count down the days as they await God’s greatest gift. I hope everyone in the family can find ways to show the love of Jesus to others. It won’t be long until we can celebrate the birth of Jesus!

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.  Ephesians 1:3
