History of Palm Sunday

After my Kansas Jayhawks got knocked out of the NCAA Tournament, I pretended not to pay attention to the championship game between the University of North Carolina and Gonzaga University. I even mostly didn’t see the news coverage of the parade back in Chapel Hill.  Congrats, North Carolina (not really).

In 2008, I was in the first year of my studies at Kansas when we won the national championship.  Classes were unofficially canceled the following week as planned and unplanned celebrations took place all over Lawrence. Out of all the celebrations, the parade on Sunday, April 13 that welcomed Bill Self and the team home to Allen Field House was insane – more than 80,000 people packed the streets.  I gave so many high-fives that week my hand was sore. The kids and I must have said “Rock Chalk!” about a thousand times.  What else could we do? Our champions had come home!

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week for Christians. On Palm Sunday, Jesus entered Jerusalem for the last time of his earthly ministry as a champion. The people believed Jesus was the Messiah, the chosen One of God who would free them from Roman rule. The One who would feed, heal, and fight to restore Israel as a political kingdom. The people lined the streets, cut palm branches, laid their cloaks on the road and shouted “Hosanna” as Jesus passed by.  The people got it mostly right. Jesus is the Messiah, an heir of David, One sent by God, but he entered Jerusalem to win a deeper victory than just restoring Israel. He had come to defeat sin and death and to pay for the sins of the whole world so that we could find our way back home to God.

On Sunday, we will again gather to celebrate our champion, Jesus. We will wave palms and lay them at the altar to honor the Messiah. We will remember that He has won the ultimate victory so that all humanity can be reconciled with God. Join me as we celebrate with Christians all over the world and pack God’s house on Palm Sunday.

See you this Sunday,

Creighton
