Reading

My child, if you accept my words
and treasure up my commandments within you,
making your ear attentive to wisdom
and inclining your heart to understanding,
if you indeed cry out for insight
and raise your voice for understanding,
if you seek it like silver
and search for it as for hidden treasures—
then you will understand the fear of the LORD
and find the knowledge of God.
Proverbs 2:1-5 (NRSV)

Reflection

Wisdom isn’t something that just falls into our laps. We don’t just wake up one day suddenly “enlightened.” Wisdom is something we seek – through prayer, through experience, through scripture, and through others.

Proverbs reminds us that God’s wisdom isn’t reserved for perfect people, but it’s available for every one who is willing to look. But that means actually looking. It means paying attention and leaning in when life is filled with noise and asking, “Lord, what do you want me to learn from this?” Wisdom is found when we stop pretending we already know the answers and start listening more than we speak.

Seeking wisdom requires a posture of humility and wonder. It’s meeting the world with openness, rather than inflexibility. It’s seeing each day as the potential to see more of God’s heart. Proverbs isn’t just a collection of “life hacks,” but it teaches us character. God’s wisdom shapes us to who we are becoming – people of discernment and deep reverence for God.

I invite you to reflect on these questions:

  • Where in my life am I tempted to act as though I already have all the answers, rather than pausing to seek God’s wisdom?
  • What “noise” or distractions most often keep me from listening for God’s voice? How can I quiet those in my daily life?
  • Who in my life exemplifies wisdom, and what can I learn from their example?
  • What steps can I take this week to intentionally listen for God’s wisdom?

Prayer

Christ, living Wisdom and Reason of the world, shape and renew our minds.

Keep us from the laziness of ignorance and complacency. Help us instead to be humble learners, sitting at your feet with open hearts – listening, questioning, and growing.

You, who so wonderfully designed the human mind, forgive us for neglecting and misusing your great gift. For you, O Christ, are the living Word of truth, dwelling eternally with the Father and the Holy Spirit, forever and ever. Amen.
