I lift up my eyes to the hills—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.
Psalm 121:1-2

Reflection

Picture weary travelers, feet dusty from the long road, lifting their eyes toward the hills of Jerusalem. These were the pilgrims of Israel, singing the Psalms of Ascent as they journeyed upward—not only physically, but spiritually—toward God. Psalm 121 is one of those songs, reminding us that help doesn’t come from the hills themselves, but from the God who made them.

We all walk through valleys at times—valleys of exhaustion, grief, uncertainty, or fear. In those moments we look up and ask, “Where will my help come from?” It’s an ancient cry that still echoes in our modern lives—in work stress, broken relationships, illness, injustice, and anxiety.

The psalmist answers with a bold declaration: “My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” Not from fleeting comforts or our own strength, but from the One who created it all—the God who holds the universe and still watches over you. The same hands that shaped the stars also steady your steps.

This psalm doesn’t promise a life free from trouble. Instead, it promises something greater: God’s unwavering presence in every moment—day and night, joy and sorrow, faith and doubt.

And let’s be honest: sometimes declaring this truth feels like planting a seed in dry ground. We say, “God is my keeper,” even when we don’t feel kept. That’s where faith takes root—not as a feeling, but as a practice. A daily, even hourly, turning of our hearts toward the truth of who God is.

When the words feel hollow, begin with honesty: “God, help my unbelief.” Scripture makes room for that kind of raw prayer. And as we speak the words of Psalm 121—even trembling, even uncertain—God writes those truths deeper into our hearts.

Today, wherever you are—on the mountaintop or in the valley—lift your eyes and know this: your help comes from the Lord. He watches over you. He will not let your foot slip. He is with you, now and always.

Prayer
Lord, in every valley, help me lift my eyes to You—my faithful help and keeper.
